How Liquid Culture Works

Liquid culture works by introducing living mushroom mycelium into a properly prepared growing medium. Because the mycelium is already active, it can begin colonizing without waiting for spores to germinate.

The basic workflow

  1. Choose the correct species and substrate. Use the matching article in The Growing Guide.
  2. Store the syringe correctly. Keep it refrigerated and never frozen. See storage and shelf life.
  3. Work clean. Sanitize the workspace, gloves, syringe exterior, and injection port.
  4. Mix, flame, cool, and inoculate. Follow the complete step-by-step syringe guide.
  5. Expand onto grain when appropriate. Learn how to make grain spawn.
  6. Watch for clean growth. Use our contamination guide when something looks unusual.
  7. Move to species-appropriate fruiting substrate. Oyster, hardwood, Cordyceps, Portobello, and Morel cultures do not all follow the same method.

What healthy colonization looks like

Healthy mycelium normally appears as expanding white growth at or near the inoculation points. Density and speed vary by species: oyster mycelium can be fast and dense, Lion's Mane can appear fine and wispy, and slower hardwood species need more patience.
