Why start from liquid culture?

Lion's Mane grows from living mycelium, and a liquid culture is exactly that — active, genetically consistent tissue from a single verified parent. Compared to spores, it colonizes faster and fruits more predictably, which matters for a species that rewards clean, vigorous growth.

Substrate

Lion's Mane is a wood-lover. It thrives on supplemented hardwood sawdust — typically hardwood fuel pellets combined with wheat bran or soy hull, hydrated and sterilized. Many growers first expand the culture on sterilized grain, then use that colonized grain to inoculate bulk hardwood substrate.

Colonization

After inoculating, incubate in the low-to-mid 70s °F in the dark. Lion's Mane mycelium is fine and wispy rather than dense and rope-like — that's normal for this species. Full colonization of a grain jar usually takes one to two weeks.

Fruiting conditions

• Temperature: around 65–70 °F
• Humidity: high, roughly 85–95%
• Fresh air: Lion's Mane needs good fresh-air exchange; too much CO₂ causes stunted, coral-like growth
• Light: indirect light is enough to trigger and guide fruiting

Grower's tips

Harvest when the spines are elongating but before they yellow, for the best texture and flavor. Cut cleanly at the base and you'll often get a second flush. Keep humidity steady — Lion's Mane dislikes drying out mid-pin.
